The aim of the study was to determine the presence of syncytial connections between the neurons of the ganglia. The study material included various sections of the colon taken from 61 corpses of both sexes at different ages of extrauterine human development, 64 pieces of resection and biopsy material obtained as a result of surgical interventions on this organ. The pieces were cut from the proximal, middle and distal thirds of the colon. The obtained material was fixed in 10% neutral formalin or Carnoy's fluid.
The fixed pieces were treated with alcohol 960, and then embedded in paraffin. From these pieces, sections 5-7 μm thick were made. The prepared preparations were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, methylene blue, Van Gieson's methods, silver salt impregnation (Ranvier-Goyer and Bielschowsky-Gross methods), and the universal method of selective argyrophilic structure detection impregnation.
We determined that connections between neurons can be formed in two ways. The first way - the connection is obtained as a result of joining the ends of fibers in the contact zone. The second way syncytial cytoplasmic connections are formed by matching the processes of neighboring nerve cells. Thick interneuronal bridges, called paired proximal syncytial junctions, are found throughout the colon. We observed the transformation of neurons located close to each other into a large binuclear cell. In some cases, 3 or more syncytial connections are observed in the neuronal membranes. The obtained data can be useful for pathophysiologists to optimize the pathogenesis of numerous pathologies of the gastrointestinal system, and for gastroenterologists to improve the quality of treatment of various nosological forms of this organ.
