In the study, gender differences in indicators of volume and area of the pituitary fossa were studied in different types of the skull and in different shapes of the pituitary fossa. For this, 84 tomograms taken from the archives of the Department of Radiology of the Teaching Surgery Clinic and Department of Radiation Diagnostics and Therapy of Azerbaijan Medical University were retrospectively analyzed. "RadiAnt DICOM Viewer" software was used to view the tomograms. 30 of the analyzed skulls had round, 27 oval, and 27 flat pituitary fossa. The statistical analysis of the pituitary fossa showed that the area indicator in women was 90.3±6.3mm2 in round shape and 94.5±4.3mm2 in oval shape, which is higher than the corresponding indicators in men. In the flat shape, it has the same size (91.9±3.3mm2) in both women and men. The same dynamics were observed in the comparison of volume indicators. The area of the pituitary fossa was smaller in men in dolichocranial skulls than in brachycranial and mesocranial skulls, and in women in mesocranial skulls compared to brachycranial and dolichocranial skulls. Volume indicators were lower in men in dolichocranial skulls compared to brachycranial and mesocranial skulls, and in women in mesocranial skulls compared to brachycranial and dolichocranial skulls.
Thus, gender differences in indicators of volume and area of the pituitary fossa were found in different types of the skull and different shapes of the pituitary fossa. The results obtained in the study can be used as standards in the analysis of tomograms during various pathologies of the pituitary fossa or pituitary gland.
